The city’s telephone office opened on the 400 block of 12th Street. Before World War II, the city had no public telephones. Residents had to “ring” an operator on a large switchboard and be connected to a phone. Before the age of cell phones, the monthly phone bill might have been $1.50. During the era of cell phones, however, it’s important to note that residents in Nederland had to walk a few blocks to reach the telephone office.
Aside from the city’s railroad connections, the city also has several notable landmarks. The city was named after a famous French priest, Father Fred Hardy, who had played vaudeville in New York and studied in Paris. Before entering the seminary, he had already begun to pastor four churches. In the 1940s, he acquired a weekly newspaper. He also worked in Louisiana, and the community’s population grew to more than fifteen thousand people.
In 1860, the Christian Hillebrand Ranch owned 1,000 horses and 2,500 cattle. The town’s first interurban line was built in 1913, and in 1921, a railroad was built between Nederland and Port Neches. In 1921, the state built a two-lane highway through the town, but the east side of the road was only one-lane and shelled solid up to the 1800 block. In 1938, the state made the intersection of the two-lane highways of Highway 69 and Highway 347 paved the streets.
The city’s population is predominantly Dutch. The town is located about 11 miles west of Interstate 10 in Houston. US 69 and FM 365 are two 
main highways that merge in the city. The latter serves the port cities of Beaumont and Port Arthur. In addition, the town is served by the US-69/287/96 and FM 365. Moreover, the intersection of these roads is a perfect example of a unique culture and history.
