Texas State University is a public research university located in San Marcos, Texas. The university was founded in 1899 as the Southwest Texas State Normal School. It opened its doors with 303 students in 1903. The school’s name has undergone many changes over the years, but its founding principles remain the same.
San Marcos is a city located in Hays County, Texas. Its city limits also extend into Caldwell County and Guadalupe County. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and lies on Interstate 35 between Austin and San Antonio.
The university’s total undergraduate enrollment is 33,193 (fall 2020). There are about 40% males and 59% females. About one-seventh of its 
students live on campus, while 83% live off-campus. The school is part of the University System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The University has a reputation for producing some of the best students and researchers in the country. Its alumni include President Lyndon B. Johnson, who graduated from the university in 1930.

Texas State University was originally called the Southwest Texas State Normal School. Its mission changed over the years from training teachers to becoming a regional university. Its name was changed to Southwest Texas State Teachers College and later to Southwest Texas State University. The university changed its name again in 2003, and the San Marcos part was removed. Today, it is known as Texas State University-San Marcos.
