Fort Parker State Park

Fort Parker State Park is a Texas state park that is located near the towns of Groesbeck and Mexia. The land that became the park was donated in 1935 by the city of Mexia. The park is a natural beauty that offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The Fort Parker State Park Campground offers 35 sites along Fort Parker Lake. These campsites are equipped with water/electric hookups and picnic tables. The park also offers fishing opportunities and equestrian trails. The park is pet-friendly, and dogs are allowed in the water on a leash.

Fort Parker State Park offers overnight camping. You can choose from screened shelters, traditional campsites, or group sites. Four sleeping barracks accommodate up to 96 people. The park also offers nature classes, most of which are free. If you are camping with your dog, there are often activities designed specifically for them.

Fort Parker State Park is situated near the site of Springfield, a mid-19th-century African American settlement. At one time, blacks were barred from visiting the state park, and it wasn’t until the 1960s that the law was finally changed. This resulted in the construction of the park.

Fort Parker State Park also has a cemetery. This is where many pioneers from East Texas rest. There is even a grave of a man who was part of the American Revolutionary War. Two Texas Revolution veterans are also buried here. A small park on the grounds is perfect for dogs. There are even a few safe trails for dogs to walk on.

The park is perfect for a family outing. The park is family friendly and no alcohol is allowed in the park. The park offers free loaner Jr Ranger backpacks, canoes for families, and fishing poles. The park’s historic buildings are beautiful and offer plenty of outdoor activities.
