Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro, Texas is a beautiful location. Founded in 1867, this military installation was named for Union General Israel B. Richardson, who was killed at Antietam during the Civil War. The fort was active from 1867 to 1878.
The Fort Richardson Interpretive Center tells the story of the soldiers, Comanches, and Kiowas who lived in this historic site. You can also take a walking tour to learn more about the park’s history. The Fort has seven restored buildings, including the post hospital. The post hospital has 18-inch-thick walls, a wood-frame veranda around the first floor, and two large wards. The post hospital’s staff tended to more than battle wounds and even deaths.
Fort Richardson State Park offers a variety of activities for everyone, from hiking and biking to fishing and horseback riding. There are also plenty of facilities for families to enjoy, including bathrooms and grilling stations. One trail starts across the parking area of the Interpretive Center and emerges onto Park Road 61 near site 13. Another one, called the Lost Creek Nature Trail, begins beyond site 22 and ends near Lost Creek Ford.
Fort Richardson was constructed during the Reconstruction period after the American Civil War. Though the park is located in a northern state, the name was chosen after a Vermont general, not a Southern one. In fact, Fort Richardson was named after a general who had served both sides during the War Between the States and the Mexican-American War, culminating in Mexico’s independence.

The Fort Richardson Magazine was a historic Army outpost. It’s still in good condition and a great place to visit if you love history. It’s home to the 2nd Battalion of the 131st Field Artillery, 36th Division. This group became known as the “Lost Battalion.”
