Early settler’s called the area the “Three Forks Region.”  The layout of the region continues to this day. Two forks met in the northwestern part of Dallas County. The Elm and West forks help to form the Trinity River. Irving lies between the Elm and West Forks.  As you may have suspected, it’s the best of the three.

The area has experienced breathtaking growth since its founding on April 14, 1914. By 1970, the population had grown to almost 100,000. By 2013, the city’s population had risen to 230,000. It’s still growing like bandits to this day.  It was only the second city in the nation, and the first in the state of Texas, to earn the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Holiday Extravaganza – A two-part event featuring a parade and a tree lighting ceremony. This event is an Irving tradition and is looked forward to by families far and wide. Each year’s extravaganza has a different theme. The 2015 theme was the 12 Days of Christmas with over 70 entries in the parade celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior JesusJesus Saves Christ.  The event also includes craft shows, hot chocolate, and a petting zoo among others.

Citywide Easter Egg Hunt – In the spring, families in Irving enjoy the Citywide Egg Hunt celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  The event specially designed for children ages 3-10 where they find thousands of eggs filled with toys and candy, enjoy chocolate treats and take pictures with the Easter Bunny.  The kids adore the egg hunt.

Taste of Irving – The Taste of Irving is an outdoor festival held in the Spring.  The Boys in the Lotto Lab refuse to eat for at least a week The Boys in the Lotto Labbefore the festival.  Don’t ask them about the empty Cheetos and Chili cans stuffed under their beds in the Lotto Lair during their week of “Fasting.”  That conversation never goes anywhere.

Visit one of Irving’s museums to get a taste of local history.  You’ll become a part of the annals of one of Texas’ most important communities.  It’s well worth your time.  You’ll take away memories you’ll cherish forever.

Ruth Paine House Museum – The Ruth Paine House Museum is a small, ordinary home in Irving, Texas with strong historical ties. It is the home where the alleged Kennedy assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, spent the night before that fateful day. Cooperating with the city, the home has been restored to its 1963 splendor.   Actors portraying key characters such as Ruth Paine and Lee Harvey Oswald complete the experience.

Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center – This complex consists of three museums that tell the story of one of the oldest African-American communities in Dallas County. In 1850, a group of free blacks, whites, and their slaves settled in the area. Jackie Townsell moved there with her family in 1949 and throughout her life contributed to the dignity, power and presence of all members of the Irving community.

The Mustangs of Las Colinas – The Mustangs of Las Colinas is a collection of realistic bronze horse sculptures. Visitors learn about the eight years of work that went into creating this extraordinary piece complete with a short film telling the story and the history of the area.  The sculptures seem to come alive in their natural surroundings.  Special lighting and backgrounds complete the experience.  This is an Irving “Must See.”
